Sights & Sounds: This Nativity scene reveals a beauty that endures

This Christmas season, visitors to Saint Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral in Newark, NJ, can contemplate the mystery of God’s presence among us before a Nativity that reflects both the parish’s rich history and its vibrant present.

According to Father Camilo Cruz, pastor of St. Patrick’s, the figures in the parish’s Nativity scene date from the 1800s and were recently restored. “These historic figures have accompanied generations of the faithful in prayer and contemplation, bearing silent witness to the enduring beauty of the Christmas story,” he told Jersey Catholic. “Their restoration not only preserves an important part of our parish’s heritage but also renews a sacred tradition that continues to speak to the heart of our community today.”

The location where Mary and Joseph welcome their newborn baby is also revealing. Cleverly crafted to resemble ancient stonework, the scenery was built by Kevin Sanchez, brother of Rev. Danny Pabon, pastor of Saint Leo Parish in Elmwood. Among the intricate details in the scene, visitors can spot the parish’s 175th-anniversary logo. It serves to remind worshippers that “countless souls have come to Christ through this parish, and that St. Patrick’s has long been a beacon of hope and a guiding star for families seeking light, belonging, and faith,” said Father Cruz.

Christ Child at the center

Father Cruz added that the restored Nativity scene is “a living expression of our parish as a Domestic Church” that “places the Christ Child at the heart of a story that continues to unfold through generations.”

“As we gather before the manger, we are invited to kneel and contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation; God made flesh, entering our world in humility and love. In this sacred scene, we encounter a profound truth: God chooses closeness, vulnerability, and mercy,” Father Cruz said.

On Dec. 16, the parish’s Hispanic community began its nine-day “Novena del Niño Jesús,” a tradition that goes back more than 50 years—another example of how the past and present are richly interwoven at the historic church.
