Sights & Sounds: Newark Archdiocese hosts Mass for young adults

On the Solemnity of All Saints, more than 50 young adults from around the Archdiocese of Newark gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, NJ, for a special Mass bringing together Catholics ages 18-35.

The Nov. 1 Mass for Young Adults was organized by the Archdiocese of Newark’s Office for Youth & Young Adult Ministry and coordinated by Sr. Guerline Joseph, F.M.A.

Father Matthew Gonzalez, rector of the Cathedral Basilica, celebrated the Mass and welcomed the young adults with a special message: “This is your spiritual home.”

Referring to the Solemnity of All Saints and the cathedral’s beautiful stained-glass windows, Father Gonzalez reflected on the call to holiness, encouraging young adults to receive the light of Christ. In that way they would become the people God created them to be and illuminate the world through their faith, he explained.

“A saint is someone the light shines through,” he said, explaining that just as light reveals the beauty of stained glass, God’s grace transforms each person and allows Christ’s light to shine through them.

Becoming ‘who God has called you to be’

Father Gonzalez encouraged those present to keep God at the center of their lives through prayer, the sacrament of penance, and the Eucharist. He also reminded young adults that following Christ does not mean sacrificing their individuality or freedom, but rather becoming more fully the people God calls them to be.

“Have the courage to bring your whole present and future to Christ,” he said. “Do not be afraid of becoming who God has called you to be.”

Young adults representing parishes throughout Essex, Bergen, Hudson, and Union counties attended the Mass; it marks the beginning of an initiative to bring young adults from across the archdiocese together in faith and fellowship.

Following the Mass, participants had the opportunity to tour the Cathedral Basilica, socialize, and participate in a raffle while learning more about ways to get involved with the ministry.

The next Mass for Young Adults is scheduled for April 4, 2027.
