Sights & Sounds: Apostolate serves Newark families in need
A group of 18 youth and young adults from the Archdiocese of Newark’s African American, African, and Caribbean Apostolate recently visited the Newark YMCA’s Emergency Residence Shelter to serve pizza and refreshments to families residing there. The shelter provides safe housing and support services to individuals and families in need.
“The children had a great time,” said Rashaan Garlin, associate director of the Archdiocese of Newark’s African American, African, and Caribbean Apostolate. “They were not only uplifted but felt a lot of love and the spirit of giving as they were introduced to the families they served.”
Youth and young adults from the apostolate had produced gift bags during earlier Martin Luther King Day celebrations. Those bags, containing toiletries and essential supplies, were also distributed to families during the service outing.
After their April 11 visit to the shelter, young people from the ministry enjoyed a bowling outing in Belleville. Some of them also spoke about their experience during a Mass at Saint Patrick & Assumption All Saints Parish in Jersey City.
Garlin added that YMCA program directors were delighted by the apostolate’s outreach efforts and invited them to return soon.
