From the Archives: “Catholic Peace Corps” in Newark, 1969
Rev. George L. Mader, director of the International Liaison Office of the Archdiocese of Newark, places an advertisement aimed at recruiting new volunteers on the side of a bus in August 1969. The Liaison Office began as Fr. Mader’s vision to form a “Catholic Peace Corps,” connecting Catholic volunteers with areas of need, especially focusing on poverty and social justice. The organization eventually grew beyond the Archdiocese of Newark and is now a national organization known as the Catholic Volunteer Network.
