Parishes celebrate Christmas with Broadway stars, artistic creations, other fun initiatives

With Christmas fast approaching, parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Newark are finding ways to bring their congregations together in celebration. And while there have been plenty of tree lightings and wreath makings as always, some church communities are commemorating the yuletide season in a particularly unique fashion. Here are a few examples:

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Oratory in Montclair

In tribute to its heritage as an Italian parish, Montclair’s Our Lady of Mount Carmel Oratory invited its congregation to participate in a holiday tradition that originated in Italy — the Presepio, or Nativity scene. Numerous families constructed their own Nativity scenes out of art supplies while enjoying pizza and other treats. They also learned about the rich history of Italian creches from Marylou Romano, a parishioner and founder of the nonprofit D’Italia Programs for cultural preservation.

Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River

Santa Claus often visits communities ahead of Christmas, but this year, the Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River welcomed the saint who inspired him instead. St. Nicholas first stopped by a Mass on Dec. 1, where Father Bob Stagg introduced him to the congregation. A few days later, parishioners welcomed him back for his feast day, which they celebrated with breakfast, crafts, and fellowship. And though Kris Kringle was not in attendance, the real St. Nick took plenty of pictures with the youngest parishioners by the Christmas tree.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scotch Plains

This Christmas, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scotch Plains encouraged its parishioners to share the gift of their artistic talent through a holiday-themed art contest. Children and adults across five age groups — 7 and under, 8-12, 13-15, 16-18, and over 18 — submitted works depicting what the spirit of Christmas means to them. These pieces were then displayed at the parish’s Christmas Celebration and Holiday Market, where the winners were awarded prizes.

St. John the Baptist Church in Hillsdale

Christmas concerts are a hallmark of many community festivities, but Hillsdale’s St. John the Baptist Church offers a musical experience much different than most. Each year, Broadway star Ciarán Sheehan and a host of professional musicians perform a medley of carols and showtunes to raise funds for the parish. The 2024 edition of the concert featured conductor, musical director, and pianist Sue Anderson; multi-instrumentalist Eamonn O’Rourke; and Broadway thespians Craig Schulman and Kaley Ann Voorhees, who entertained a sold-out crowd of 700 people.
