NJCC informs Catholic families about education tax credit

The New Jersey Catholic Conference (NJCC), the nonpartisan public policy voice for the Catholic Church in New Jersey, is informing Catholic families about a new federal tax credit that could benefit Catholic families in the Garden State.

“We have important news to share with New Jersey Catholic families about an Education Freedom Tax Credit with potential to significantly benefit families and students. To alert you of the upcoming opportunity, explain how it works, and keep you informed as news develops, we have created an easily accessible online resource,” NJCC shared in an announcement.

NJScholarshipCredit.org, provides information about the credit, updates on the program, action opportunities, and answers to frequently asked questions.

“Dedicated pages are included with resources for Catholic school families, parents, students, educators, school leaders, pastors, parish communities, donors, taxpayers, and policymakers,” NJCC stated.

State opt-in required

The announcement also explained that the tax credit can “potentially expand education opportunities and offer financial support for qualified students and families” in New Jersey.

However, the State of New Jersey must take action to participate in the federally funded program. December 31, 2026, is the current deadline for the state to opt in.

In its online overview, the NJCC states that the credit “could bring direct educational support to New Jersey families at no cost to the state or taxpayers – if the state opts in to participate.”

NJScholarshipCredit.org will continue to evolve as a resource “as federal guidance, state decisions, deadlines, and other developments become available,” the NJCC said.

Founded in 1949, the New Jersey Catholic Conference serves as a liaison to lawmakers, government agencies, and institutions and coordinates communications and activities between the bishops and secular agencies. The state’s Catholic bishops serve as NJCC’s board of directors, or “Board of Bishops,” which is presided over by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark.
