Sights & Sounds: Teens reach for the stars at Space Camp
Six teens from Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Newark spent an intensive week at the Advanced Space Academy, part of the Space Camp program at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
During the program, Jadyra, Annalise, Alejandro, Isabella, Chris, and Mila built and launched rockets, piloted jet aircraft simulators, and participated in a simulated extended-duration mission to Mars. They also experienced a moonwalk in a gravity chair and endured the spinning forces of a multi-axis trainer.
The educational adventure was made possible thanks to scholarships from the Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Schools (SFIC), a partner of the Archdiocese of Newark. SFIC has offered the Space Camp scholarships for the past 29 years with funding from former archdiocesan parishioners Mark and Kathy Walchak.
The six teens are students at Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City, Mother Seton Regional High School in Clark, Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange, and Saint Dominic Academy in Jersey City.
