Sights & Sounds: ‘Symbols of the Holy Spirit’ mosaics unveiled
Holy Cross Cemetery & Mausoleum in North Arlington, NJ, recently unveiled nine sacred mosaics that depict ‘Symbols of the Holy Spirit.’
Created by artists Alexander and Daniela Mandradjiev of Alexander Studio in Los Angeles, the nine mosaics are artistic meditations upon key signs of the Spirit – Dove, Flame, Light, Water, Wind, Lamp, Hands, Clouds, and Oil. Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark commissioned the work in 2024. According to the artists, thousands of tesserae of Venetian glass, precious stones, and 24K gold leaf were arranged to convey “subtle movement and beauty” in a “prayer in color and light.”

“It was important for us that the art itself breathe with the same energy as the Spirit it represents,” Alexander Mandradjiev said. The couple’s son, cinematic illustrator Alexander Mandradjiev, Jr., aided in the development process and created conceptual sketches of the works.
The studio previously collaborated with Holy Cross in 2013, producing six monumental mosaics for the Chapel Mausoleum that depicted the six days of Creation.
