Sights & Sounds: Mercy House supports new and expecting moms

The Archdiocese of Newark’s Mercy House celebrated motherhood while providing crucial supplies to more than 100 expectant and new mothers in need during baby showers at its locations in Jersey City on June 1, Newark on June 2, and Elizabeth on June 3.

New mothers and moms-to-be received large bags filled with diapers, wipes, infant clothing and other nursery essentials. Guests also received teddy bears for their babies and enjoyed refreshments, including pink and blue cupcakes. Several attendees won major raffle prizes like a playpen and baby bouncer.

During the festivities, Mercy House Director Cheryl A. Riley and volunteers informed guests about the ministry’s ongoing support services for mothers after childbirth. They also asked each woman about her current needs for newborns or older children, providing additional items like blankets as needed. Some women arranged to pick up larger items, including a car seat, booster seat, and stroller, at a later date.

Making new moms feel special

“Many of the women we serve cannot afford their own baby showers, so this was an opportunity to provide them with the supplies they need while also making them feel special,” said Riley, noting that all items distributed during the baby showers were new. “Our assistance does not end here. We made sure everyone left knowing they can come to us whenever they need help. All mothers deserve to have someone in their corner.”

Founded in 2018, The Mercy House provides nonperishable food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture and support finding employment and housing to anyone in need. Its three locations in Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth serve over 500 people each week.
