Sights & Sounds: New backpacks and many smiles at The Mercy House
To kick off the 2026-27 school year, The Archdiocese of Newark’s Mercy House distributed around 800 new backpacks to kids in need at its three locations in Jersey City, Newark, and Elizabeth. The backpacks were filled with supplies the students will need as they return to class, including notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, rulers, and other essentials.
“Every child deserves to start the new year with a new bookbag filled with new school supplies,” said Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House.
Backpacks and supplies were donated by parishes, the Knights of Columbus, youth groups, and generous individuals. In addition to receiving the items from staff and volunteers, families were treated to ice cream and had the opportunity to participate in raffles with special prizes.
Founded in 2018, The Mercy House provides nonperishable food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture and support finding employment and housing to anyone in need.
