Obituary: Sister Mary Elizabeth Dacey, S.C., 90

Sister Mary Elizabeth Dacey, 90, formerly Sister Elizabeth Maureen, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, died May 7, 2021, at Saint Joseph Health and Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Grove.

Sister Mary Elizabeth was born in Jamaica Plain, Mass., the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Manley) Dacey. She entered the Sisters of Charity on March 24, 1948and was a member for 73 years.

Sister Mary Elizabeth graduated from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, N.J. (now Saint Elizabeth University) with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education; from New York University, New York, N.Y. with a M.A. degree in English and Fordham University, the Bronx, N.Y. with a M.A. degree in Public Communications.

Sister Mary Elizabeth was an educator in New Jersey and Connecticut. She served at St. Michael School, Union City; St. Brendan School, Clifton; St. Joseph School, Echo Lake, West Milford; St. Mary School, Waterbury, Conn.; Sacred Heart School, St. Anne School, St. Paul of the Cross School and St. Joseph School, Jersey City. Sister Mary Elizabeth also served at Marylawn of the Oranges, South Orange, and East Orange Catholic High School, East Orange. In addition, Sister Mary Elizabeth was Adjunct Professor of Communications at St. Peter’s College (now St. Peter’s University), Hudson County Community College, and New Jersey City University, Jersey City. After moving to the Convent of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station in 2010, Sister Mary Elizabeth volunteered as an English teacher at Josephine’s Place, Elizabeth, N.J.

Sister Mary Elizabeth is survived by the Sisters of Charity, her brother Frederick, her nieces Cheryl Fafara and Joan Dacey, nephews Stephen and Richard, one grandniece, and three great grandnephews.
