From the Archives – Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Participants in the Guadalupan Torch Run stop at Holy Family Church in Union City in 2002. The Guadalupan Torch Run is an annual pilgrimage that begins in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City and ends at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York on Dec. 12, the Feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In addition to being a veneration of the Virgin of Guadalupe, it is meant to bring awareness to the plight of undocumented people living and working in the United States. In this photo, one of the runners lights a holy candle with the flame of the torch. (Archdiocese of Newark Archives, Catholic Advocate collection)
