Cardinal Tobin takes oath as conclave begins
At approximately 4:30 p.m. Rome time, the College of Cardinals entered the Sistine Chapel to begin the conclave to elect a new pope. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, was among those cardinal electors taking an oath in Latin, which translates as follows:
“And I, N., Cardinal N., promise, vow, and swear,” and he shall add, placing his hand on the Gospel presented by the ceremonial ministers, “with the help of God and these holy Gospels which I touch with my hand.”
Soon the words “Extra omnes!” will be uttered and everyone who is not an elector or part of the conclave staff (members of which have also taken oaths of secrecy) will leave the Sistine Chapel and, following a meditation upon the election of a new Supreme Pontiff, the first vote will be held.
