A Thanksgiving Message from Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

As we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us pause to reflect on the many ways God has blessed and enriched our lives. This time of year provides a new opportunity to express our gratitude for all the gifts we receive, especially for God’s love and mercy, which nourishes us every day. Thanksgiving is a reminder of the enduring ability of faith, family, and community to unite and uplift us in an often divided and uncertain world.

According to Pope Francis, “If we are bearers of gratitude, the world itself will become better, even if only a little bit, but that is enough to transmit a bit of hope. The world needs hope. And with gratitude, with this habit of saying thank you, we transmit a bit of hope.” These words remind us that gratitude is more than a seasonal emotion; it is a characteristic of an authentic Christian life. When we are thankful for what we have, we are invited to share it, especially with those who are in need or who may feel forgotten.

This Thanksgiving, let us open our hearts to God’s grace and be inspired to live lives marked by kindness and compassion. As we gather with loved ones, may our homes be filled with joy, generosity, and a renewed commitment to serve others. Let us also pray for those who are lonely, struggling, or far from home so that they may experience the comfort of God’s love through the care of others.

I give thanks to God for all of you every day and for the many ways you witness Christ’s presence in our world. May this day deepen your sense of gratitude and strengthen your resolve to be stewards of God’s mercy and ambassadors of His boundless love.
