From the Archives: Duke Ellington in Newark, 1968

Jazz legend Duke Ellington performed a Sacred Music concert at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in October 1968. The concert was sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Newark to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Youth Consultation Service, and the Archdiocese agreed to loan the use of the Cathedral for the occasion. Archbishop Boland delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the longstanding cooperation between the Episcopal and Catholic Churches in Newark—dating back to 1828, when Newark’s first Catholic church, St. John’s on Mulberry Street, borrowed Trinity Episcopal Church for a fundraising lecture to support its construction.
