Sights & Sounds: Springtime at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart
Last weekend we celebrated “Laetare Sunday,” when many priests and deacons wore rose-colored vestments at Mass and flowers were temporarily returned to Church. While Lent is a period of penitence and sacrifice, each year the Church sets aside a day on the Lenten calendar to especially remember and celebrate that Christ is Risen.
In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI explained that laetare is Latin for rejoice, and that the title Laetare Sunday is taken “from the first word of the entrance antiphon in the liturgy of Mass. The liturgy today invites us to rejoice because Easter, the day of Christ’s victory over sin and death, is approaching.”
In the city of Newark this week, nature is also reminding us in hues of pink, white, and yellow that the lifelessness of winter is coming to an end. All around the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, cherry blossom trees and other plants have begun to bloom in magnificent displays, and the birds seem to be singing in celebration. As we continue our Lenten observances, we are reminded yet again that Easter will soon be here.
