Youth gathered at altar Jubilee for Youth

Sights & Sounds: Jubilee for Youth witnesses to “the hope that does not disappoint”

On Dec. 7, more than 200 young people gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, NJ, to celebrate the Jubilee Year of Hope. Family members and adult leaders joined them for a Holy Mass organized by the archdiocesan Office for Youth and Young Adult Ministry.

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, presided at the Mass, joined by numerous priests from across the archdiocese.

Welcoming everyone to the cathedral basilica, Cardinal Tobin recalled that the Jubilee Year of Hope had begun over 11 months before and was drawing to a close. “The last big celebration before we conclude our pilgrimage of hope is this Jubilee for Youth with all of you,” the cardinal said. “Isn’t that fitting?”

Indicating the young people present, he added:

We have hope before us, looking for the hope that does not disappoint. We are proud of all of you. Even more, we are grateful for you, and we’re happy to pray with you today.”

During the celebration, more than 80 young people and 30 adults were recognized for their efforts in youth ministry in parishes and schools. Cardinal Tobin later thanked them for “receiving the Word” and for “making room in your hearts for loving God and your neighbor.”

He also thanked the adult leaders and youth ministers who accompany young people in the Archdiocese of Newark and produce “good fruit” through their work.
