Sights & Sounds: Honoring the Blessed Mother with a crown
By tradition, the month of May is dedicated to Blessed Mother. The practice, rooted in the Tricesimum (“30-day devotion”) of the Middle Ages, was firmly established in Rome by the 18th century and spread throughout the Catholic world. Mary, the Mother of God, is honored as the Queen of Heaven and Earth who teaches us to live with faith, humility, and love.
Parishes and schools across the Archdiocese of Newark have been praying the Rosary and singing Marian hymns this month. At the beginning of May, they also crowned images of Our Lady, a devotion inspired by this verse from the Book of Revelation:
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev 12:1)
