Sights & Sounds: Fall fun as school year kicks into full gear
The school year has kicked into full gear and Catholic schools around the Archdiocese of Newark are once again fertile ground for learning. In addition to their traditional studies in language arts, mathematics, science, and history, children and teens have gained valuable knowledge about caring for the environment, safety, social responsibility, and the pursuit of holiness. Many of these lessons came via fun, hands-on activities or outdoor adventures.
For Fire Safety Week, children at St. Joseph the Carpenter in Roselle Park and St. Elizabeth School in Wyckoff had the opportunity to meet local firefighters. Second-graders at Holy Trinity School in Westfield used household items to craft models of the apostles—which they then presented to their classmates. And at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, students engaged in an adventure day where they learned about leadership and collaboration.
All these activities call to mind what Pope Benedict XVI told students during a visit to the UK in 2010:
A good school provides a rounded education for the whole person. And a good Catholic school, over and above this, should help all its students to become saints.”
– Pope Benedict XVI, September 17, 2010
