‘Resurrection at work in our lives,’ Cardinal Tobin says at memorial Mass for deceased clergy
Each November, during the month of All Souls, members of the archdiocesan community, including bishops, priests, deacons, religious women, men, and lay faithful, gather to remember all priests and deacons of the Archdiocese of Newark who died in the past year.
The memorial Mass celebrated November 3 honored the lives of 55 members of the clergy in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, N.J. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, was the principal celebrant.
“Today, Jesus’s revelation also challenges us. We too are called to believe in the resurrection, not as a sort of distant mirage – but as a reality and event already present, and even now, mysteriously at work in our lives,” explained Cardinal Tobin during his homily.
“And our faith in the resurrection neither ignores nor masks the very human emotion we feel in the face of death,” Cardinal Tobin added. “The tears we shed for our priests, deacons, and bishops, for our family and friends, for the innocent victims of hate and violence – these tears are real, and these are the very tears God has promised to wash away.”
Surviving family members of the deceased and priests and deacons from the archdiocese in attendance participated by accepting a flower in honor of the dead as the names of loved ones were read out loud by Reverend John J. Chadwick, S.T.D., Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Newark.
