From the Archives: Mass for Mariners in Newark, 1967

Rev. John Ferreire de Melo, chaplain of the Portuguese naval cadet training ship Sagres, celebrated a Mass at Our Lady of Fatima in Newark for the officers and crew and the local Portuguese community on June 18, 1967. Archbishop Boland presided, and ship personnel served as acolytes, commentators, and lectors. The Sagres was at Port Newark for a week as part of a goodwill visit following the completion of its training cruise.
