From the archives — Anniversary of Blessed John Paul I’s election

Pope John Paul I greeted Bishop Dominic A. Marconi at the Vatican in September 1978, soon after he was elected on Saturday, Aug. 26, 1978. Pope John Paul I’s papacy was one of the shortest in papal history, beginning with his election on Aug. 26, 1978, and ending with his death of a heart attack only 33 days later on Sept. 28, 1978. Auxiliary Bishops Dominic A. Marconi and Jerome A. Pechillo, who attended an audience with the Pope and 50 other American bishops just a week before his passing, were shocked by the news.
