From the archives – A war hero and an archbishop
Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh congratulates John Cullen, a Coast Guardsman who uncovered a Nazi sabotage plot, at Newark Preparedness Parade on Aug. 16, 1942. In June 1942, Cullen encountered and reported a team of Nazi saboteurs who had landed by U-boat near Amagansett, Long Island. After a two-week manhunt, the men were apprehended. Cullen received the Legion of Merit Medal.
