Cathedral Basilica to Host 53rd Annual Candlelight Carol Sing
One of the most beloved Christmas traditions in northern New Jersey returns to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart this December. The Archdiocese of Newark will host the 53rd Annual Candlelight Carol Sing on Wednesday, Dec. 18, and Thursday, Dec. 19, at 8 p.m.
The event has become a holiday highlight, drawing standing-room-only crowds to the historic cathedral. The concert, which features nearly 20 holiday songs performed by the Cathedral Basilica’s choir, also invites the audience to join in on several familiar carols. Accompanied by a world-class pipe organ and instrumental ensemble, the choir creates a festive atmosphere enhanced by the Cathedral’s stunning seasonal décor and the soft glow of candlelight.
A key moment of the evening is the performance of Silent Night. As the church’s lights are dimmed, 1,300 candles illuminate the soaring architecture, creating a moving atmosphere of reverence and peace.
The Candlelight Carol Sing’s history began in 1969 under unexpected circumstances. That year, a snowstorm prevented the scheduled organist from reaching the Cathedral for a planned recital. With about 50 concertgoers in attendance, then-Cathedral Music Director John Rose responded by leading an impromptu carol singalong to lift the spirits of the disappointed audience. The spontaneous gathering was so well received that it was suggested they repeat it the following year.
The first official Candlelight Carol Sing was held in 1970 as part of the Cathedral’s Concert Series. It was a resounding success, and the tradition has continued ever since, growing in scale and popularity.
Over the decades, the event has evolved, with the Cathedral choir taking a central role, joined by instrumentalists and soloists. The inclusion of the candlelight procession has also become one of its defining features. In 2019, the 50th concert marked a milestone with the world premiere of a new composition by composer James Syler. The event has also witnessed special moments, such as a wedding proposal during the Silent Night performance.
The Candlelight Carol Sing is free to attend, with a free-will offering gratefully accepted. Due to the large crowds, attendees are encouraged to arrive early, as doors open at 7 p.m.
