Archdiocese of Newark death notices: February 2022

We remember and pray for our dearly departed clergy and men and women religious whose Masses of Christian Burial were held in January:

Sister Mary McGuiness, O.P.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 12, 2022, at Gethsemane Cemetery on the Sisters of St. Dominic Motherhouse grounds in Caldwell, N.J. for Sister Mary McGuiness, O.P., who died on Jan. 8, 2022.

Sister Mary, a Dominican Sister of Caldwell for 67 years, was a graduate of Caldwell University. She earned a master’s degree in library science from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa., and a second master’s in theology from St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN.

Using her gift of love for the scriptures of the Bible and the scriptures of Earth, she spent many years ministering at RENEW International, Plainfield, N.J. There Sister Mary worked on the development of small Christian communities and served as presenter, editor, and coordinator of publications.

In the Archdiocese of Newark, she was coordinator of the Department of Shared Responsibility and simultaneously served as staff member to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council.

Sister ministered as pastoral associate for adult education and ministry to those who were sick at St. Philomena Parish, Livingston, N.J. For the congregation, she was involved in patient care at St. Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center and served as director of scholastics.

She served at Mount Saint Dominic Academy as chairperson of the Religious Studies Department and religious studies teacher, and at Caldwell University was an instructor in library science. At Lacordaire Academy, Upper Montclair, N.J., she ministered as a teacher and librarian. Sister also taught at St. Margaret, Bayou La Batre, AL, and many other grade schools in New Jersey. Most recently, she wrote and edited materials and publications for the congregation’s Development office.

Reverend William S. O’Brien

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 19, 2022, at St. Michael Church in Cranford, N.J. for Reverend William S. O’Brien, who died on Jan. 11, 2022.

Father William S. O’Brien was a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Newark.
