Cardinal Tobin highlights human dignity in USCCB World Cup video
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, is featured in a new video released by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) as part of the Church’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The brief video highlights both the opportunities and responsibilities that accompany one of the world’s largest sporting events. The tournament will be held across North America, with MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford hosting the championship match.
“The FIFA World Cup is the world’s most watched sporting event, bringing together people of every nation, language, and culture,” Cardinal Tobin says in the video. “This year, as North America welcomes the World Cup and New Jersey prepares to host the championship match, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate both the unity and diversity of the human family.”
Reflecting on his longtime appreciation for sports, including soccer, the cardinal notes the game’s ability to bring people together and foster respect and friendship across cultures.
Vigilance on behalf of the vulnerable
Cardinal Tobin also encourages vigilance on behalf of vulnerable individuals who may face exploitation during large international events.
“As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to recognize the dignity of every person and to be attentive to those who may be at risk,” Cardinal Tobin says. “Let us pray for all who will visit our communities and remain vigilant on behalf of the vulnerable, working together so that this global celebration reflects not only the best of sport but also our shared commitment to the dignity of every human life.”
The video is part of a broader USCCB effort to encourage prayer, hospitality, and awareness as communities across the United States prepare to welcome visitors from around the world during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. On June 9, the USCCB, the New Jersey Catholic Conference, and the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference co-hosted a webinar, “Human Trafficking and Major Sporting Events.”
