Sights & Sounds: Parishes celebrate 2025 anniversaries

During the 2025 Jubilee Year, many parishes around the Archdiocese of Newark commemorated significant anniversaries. Through liturgies, feasts, and festive community events, these parishes gave thanks for the gift of faith and community.

On Oct. 19, Saint John the Apostle Church in Linden marked its 75th year with a Holy Mass celebrated by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark. Our Lady Queen of Peace in Maywood also gave thanks for 75 years of parish life during a Sept. 6 Mass, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Michael A. Saporito.

Several parishes had their 100th anniversaries this year, including St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Linden, St. Hedwig in Elizabeth, Sacred Heart of Jesus in Irvington, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Nutley.

One parish, St. Ann Catholic Church in Hoboken, has now been around for 125 years. The community welcomed Cardinal Tobin for a Mass on Nov. 2; the liturgy also marked the 100th anniversary of their church building.

In 1875, Bishop Michael Corrigan invited the Dominican Order to establish a community in Newark. Though the Dominicans later moved on, that parish, St. Antoninus, continues to thrive and is now 150 years old.

Then there is Saint Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral, which this year celebrated 175 years of existence!

We congratulate all the parishes that celebrated anniversaries in 2025. Has your parish observed a significant anniversary in 2025? Let us know at submissions@rcan.org.
