Cathedral Basilica in Newark highlight of cake show in India (video)
A huge, sweet replica of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark was part of the annual Bengaluru Cake show in India held over the holidays.
The cake show, now in its 48th year, exhibits cakes designed and created by 20 students at the Institute of Baking and Cake Art (IBCA) in India, who began planning their designs six months ago, according to The Hindu.
According to the Times Now, the Basilica confection was the largest — weighing in at 18 tons — of the 28 cakes on display this year. South First reported the Basilica design was the “highlight” of the show.
Reports said the cake artists took more than three months to complete the mega cake of the Basilica, which is the fifth largest cathedral in North America.
Institute of Baking and Cake Art were not available to comment on why the Basilica was chosen as a design.
Other cake designs included stained glasses window depicting the birth of Christ, Goddess of Berehynia, Lord Ganesha on an elephant, Santa Claus, an electric car, and a video game joystick.
“Based on our experience, we try to bring in something new every year,” the show’s manager Mohammed Farooq told The Hindu. “We pay attention to the smallest detail, be it a leaf or a pearl.”
The Bengaluru Cake Show, held at St. Joseph’s Indian High School Grounds in Bengaluru, highlights emerging technology, religious beliefs, historical figures and events, and cartoons. C. Ramachandra, the former director of Nilgiris, India initiated the event which evolved to spread a spirit of togetherness during the New Year, according to The Hindu.
