Parishes commemorate the life of Pope Benedict XVI (Photos)

While people all around the world tuned in to watch the funeral Mass of Pope Benedict XVI on Jan. 5, parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark commemorated the life of the late pope in their own way.

Some, like St. Ann in Hoboken and Immaculate Conception in Mahwah, celebrated Mass for the repose of Pope Benedict’s soul on Jan. 5. Others, like Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Park Ridge, tolled their church bells hourly to signify his passing. And a few parishes did both, like Holy Family in Nutley, who celebrated Mass for Pope Benedict on Jan. 6 and tolled their bells 95 times, for every year of his life.

Schools also participated in the commemorations. At the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Franklin Lakes, students presented on the life of the Holy Father during the week leading up to the funeral Mass. On Jan. 5, the school offered its communal rosary for him and prayed for him at Mass and Adoration the following day.
