New Covid-19 directives clear the way for greater return to normalcy during Mass
Parish liturgical ministries may return to full service, and masks are no longer required for all vaccinated ministers beginning July 3, according to updated Covid-19 directives issued by the Archdiocese of Newark earlier today.
The reception of Communion on the tongue will also be permitted beginning this weekend. However, the distribution of Communion from the cup to the assembly will not be. There are some exceptions outlined in the document regarding Communion from the cup. For example, the cup may be given to the bride and groom at a nuptial mass from a separate chalice. The new directives reiterate the change that went into effect last month that masks are no longer required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. People are no longer required to socially distance indoors or outdoors, although unvaccinated persons should maintain a safe distance from others.
Baptismal fonts and holy water receptacles may be filled July 3, according to the latest update.
According to the latest directives, in-person parish meetings may resume this weekend. Those vaccinated are not required to wear masks for indoor meetings, nor are they required to maintain social distancing. The same recommendations for Mass apply to those not vaccinated.
Although these directives represent a reduction of pandemic restrictions, the local pastors/administrators/chaplains can impose stricter regulations as needed. These may include wearing masks, social distancing, and signing in for Mass or activities.
