Churches were adorned in purple and parishioners received ashes on their foreheads as the season of Lent began on Feb. 22. The faithful filled the pews for Ash Wednesday, a sacramental service where the priests use ashes to mark the sign of the cross, symbolizing our sinful nature and need for salvation.
