Celebrating fathers at The Mercy House (Photos)

The Mercy House, a resource and referral center operated by the Archdiocese of Newark, celebrated Father’s Day for the first time by distributing over 300 gift bags to dads and their loved ones at its locations in Elizabeth, Jersey City, and Newark from June 12 to June 14.

Each Mercy House location handed out about 100 bags filled with shaving cream, deodorant, socks, and other items for men. Additionally, numerous bags were given to churches in Newark and Jersey City so the fathers in their congregations would have a happy holiday. All items were donated by parishes throughout the Archdiocese.

“At The Mercy House, we recognize the crucial role fathers play in providing for their families, so we wanted to show them appreciation for their hard work and sacrifices through this Father’s Day Gift Giveaway,” said Cheryl A. Riley, director of The Mercy House. “This was the first time we celebrated this event, but it definitely won’t be the last. We’re committed to serving our communities’ essential and spiritual needs, and at times, that includes fun and unique events such as this one.”

In August, The Mercy House will host its first-ever Italian Ice party, where families can also pick up free school supplies for the coming academic year. Then, in the fall, The Mercy House will host its annual giveaways for coats, Thanksgiving turkeys, and Christmas gifts in October, November, and December, respectively.

Founded in 2018, The Mercy House provides nonperishable food, clothing, baby supplies, furniture, and help finding work and housing for anyone in need. Its three locations in Newark, Jersey City, and Elizabeth each serve roughly 300 people every week.
