Catholic Charities opens new housing center for Newark’s homeless
On Feb. 1, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark and the city officially opened the doors to the Miller Street Pathways to Housing Center in Newark. The facility serves as a 24,000 square-foot shelter equipped with supportive social services to help homeless residents. The shelter consists of 166 beds – 84 for men and 44 for women – and 21 “code blue” beds. Additionally, seven individual suites with 17 beds are available for families.
“Catholic Charities is very excited to partner in this initiative,” said John Westervelt, chief executive officer of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark. “The Miller Street Pathways to Housing Center not only has an impact meeting the immediate needs of the homeless today, but will also impact their tomorrows as the center’s services build stability in the lives of men, women, and children in need.”
Catholic Charities is a ministry of the Archdiocese of Newark and participates in the Church’s social mission by recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of all people and responding with sincere Christian compassion to the corporeal needs of the poor and marginalized.
