Sights & Sounds: Celebrating Catholic Sisters
Catholic Sisters Week, celebrated March 8-14, shines a spotlight on the contributions of women religious who minister to God’s people through prayer, service, and love for Christ and the Gospel. The theme of the yearly campaign in 2026 is “Stories of Hope and Heart.” Those who have been impacted by the compassion and dedication of Catholic Sisters are invited to share their stories on social media using the hashtag #LikeaCatholicSister.
52 congregations of women religious are present across the four counties of the Archdiocese of Newark. Through their unique charisms and diverse backgrounds, they bear witness to Christ in parishes, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, contemplative communities, and many other places.
“We are truly blessed in the Archdiocese of Newark to be served by such diverse and generous communities of Religious Sisters,” said Sister Patricia Wormann, O.P., the archdiocese’s Delegate for Religious. “Our Sisters come from many parts of the world, including the United States, Mexico, France, Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Kenya, China, and Korea. They represent many ages, spiritualities, and charisms, yet they are united in their commitment to serve God and His people.”
She continued:
“Their ministries are wide-ranging: they serve the poor and the homeless, educate students in our Catholic schools, lead faith formation programs, care for the sick, minister in our parishes, offer the gift of contemplative prayer, and provide compassionate service in nursing homes.
Many also serve in leadership roles within their own Religious Institutes and contribute to the life and mission of the Church more broadly. In countless ways — both seen and unseen — they share the love and mercy of God with all those they encounter.”
