From the Archives: Interfaith Rally for Civil Rights in Newark, 1965

An interfaith rally was held in Newark’s Military Park on March 15, 1965, protesting police violence in Selma, Alabama, and calling for federal action to guarantee voter registration and protect the right of peaceable assembly. Rev. Joseph Faulkner, S.J., a Jersey City Jesuit who participated in the Selma demonstrations, spoke at the rally alongside Newark Mayor Hugh Addonizio; Rabbi Israel Dresner of Temple Sharey Shalom; W. P. Collier Jr., pastor of Israel Memorial AME Church; and Rev. Boyd B. Cantrell, president of the Newark branch of the NAACP.
