Archdiocese of Newark death notices: September 2022
We remember and pray for our dearly departed clergy and men and women religious whose Masses of Christian Burial were held in August:
Sister Miriam Therese Roncinske, SSND
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Wilton, Conn., for Sister Miriam Therese (Mary Rita) Roncinske, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Sister Mairiam died on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2022 at Ozanam Home in Bayside, N.Y., at the age of 93.
After pronouncing her vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1950, she taught at schools in Maryland and New York. Two of her missions were also The Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, N.J., and St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Dover, N.H. In her retirement, Sister resided at Villa Notre Dame, Wilton, Conn., before going to Ozanam Home in 2021.
Sister Ann Sullivan, SSJ
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, Aug. 12, 2022 at St. Joseph Villa in Flourtown, Pa. for Sister Ann Sullivan, a beloved member of the Union Catholic Community for 29 years and Sister of St. Joseph. Sister Ann died on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022.
According to her obituary posted by Union Catholic High School, she was the longest tenured Sister of St. Joseph in the history of the school.
In her 29-year tenure at Union Catholic, Sister Ann served as a school counselor and a longtime moderator of the student council. Most recently, Sister Ann was serving as the student support services assistant.
She also served at St. Joseph’s Roselle, Holy Family, Bayonne, and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Newark.
Deacon Leo Montini
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, for Deacon Leo Montini, a permanent deacon previously from the Archdiocese of Newark, at the chapel at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Whiting, N.J. Deacon Montini died on Aug. 15, 2022, at the age of 92.
Sister Mary Andrew Borys, CSSF
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022 at Our Lady of Lourdes
Chapel, 260 South Main Street, Lodi, N.J. for Sister Mary Andrew Borys who had a long career in Catholic education.Sister Borys died on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022.
Sister Borys, of the Felician Franciscan Sisters, had served as director of the Felician Reading Center at Felician College in Lodi; the principal of Saint Theresa School in Linden; the principal of Saint Adalbert School in Elizabeth; the vice principal of Immaculate Conception High School in Lodi; principal of Saint Michael School in Lyndhurst and teacher at Sacred Heart School in Irvington.
Father Michael A. Russo, PhD
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022 for Father Michael A. Russo at St. Cassian Church in Upper Montclair.
Father Russo died On Aug. 10, 2022 at the age of 76.
He was a professor at St. Mary’s College, Moraga, Cali. and the former Director of Communications at Archdiocese of Newark.
Catherine A. Stumbar
Wife of Permanent Deacon James Stumbar
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 30 for Catherine A. Stumbar (nee Detz), lovingly known as Kay, at Church of the Little Flower, Berkeley Heights, N.J. Mrs. Stumbar died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, at the age of 74. Kay was pre-deceased in 2019 by her beloved husband of 49 years, James “Deacon Jim” Stumbar.
She was a pastoral associate for the Church of the Little Flower in Berkeley Heights until 2014.
Father Kevin Lynch, CSP
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Sept. 1, 2022 for Father Kevin Lynch, CSP, at St. Paul the Apostle Church in New York, N.Y. He died on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, at the Mary Manning Walsh Home in New York City, at the age of 97.
Father Lynch had been a member of the Paulist community for 76 years and a priest for 69 years. He was an editor and publisher at Paulist Press for four decades. Among his creations was the well-known “Classics of Western Spirituality” book series. Father Lynch moved Paulist Press to Bergen County, N.J. in the early 1980s.
Sister Mary Lou Bauman, OP
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 31, for Sister Mary Lou Bauman, OP, at St. Aloysius Church, Caldwell, N.J. Sister Baumam died on Aug. 28, 2022 at the age of 75.
She was a sister of St. Dominic of Caldwell for 46 years and had a long career in Catholic education. She taught at Queen of Peace, North Arlington; St. Mary’s High School, Rutherford; Union Catholic High School, Scotch Plains; Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair; St. Dominic Academy, Jersey City; and Lacordaire Academy, Montclair.
Deacon Victor J. Peterson
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, Sept. 2, 2022 for Deacon Victor J. Peterson atOur Lady of Mercy Parish, Park Ridge, N.J. Deacon Peterson died on Aug. 29, 2022 at the age of 90.
Ordained Dec. 14, 1975, he was a retired deacon with Our Lady of Mercy, Park Ridge, N.J.
