Clergy unite in celebration of priesthood during powerful Chrism Mass
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., the Archbishop of Newark, was joined by his auxiliary bishops and dozens of priests from throughout the Archdiocese of Newark on March 29 to celebrate the Chrism Mass, the second observance of Holy Week. Standing before the socially-distanced clergy and parishioners, who filled the Sacred Heart Cathedral Basilica’s pews, Cardinal Tobin consecrated the Oil of the Sick, Oil of Catechumens and the Sacred Chrism for the year ahead. These holy oils were then distributed to the priests, who will use them for Baptism, the anointing of the sick and other sacraments at their parishes.
Also during the Mass, the participating priests and bishops reaffirmed their commitment to Christ by renewing their priestly promises. Cardinal Tobin delivered a stirring liturgy urging them to support and inspire their congregations as the Church continues to handle and cope with COVID-19’s repercussions.
“Tonight we bless and consecrate oil and renew promises as a pledge not to lock doors or hoard blessings,” Cardinal Tobin said. “Nor can we sit passively like shopkeepers hoping customers might return. Under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, we must lead our people out of the churches in order to proclaim a year of favor from the Lord.”
