Time for middle-school students to apply to high school

In the fall, eighth-grade students across the Archdiocese begin to prepare for to apply for high school admissions. For those planning to attend a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Newark, one of the first steps in this process is registering for the High School Placement Test (HSPT®) as part of the Cooperative Admissions Program (COOP). The entrance examination helps streamline the admissions process for students and their families.

What is the HSPT®?

The High School Placement Test (HSPT®) provides high school admissions personnel with helpful information as they evaluate an applicant’s preparedness for their school’s academic program. The HSPT® provides a standard measure and objective data helpful in admissions decision-making.

The HSPT® comprehensively examines eighth graders to assess their readiness for the ninth grade. It measures academic aptitude, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, reading, mathematics, and language achievements. High schools have used this test for over 50 years to assist with admissions, scholarship selections, and curriculum placement.

Some private high schools in the archdiocese use their own entrance exam. Click here to see the list and contact them directly for testing dates and application process.

Parents can register online for the HSPT® through Oct. 24 at www.njcoopexam.org. The fee is $70, which includes reporting scores to three high schools. The same website provides details on additional reporting or accommodations.
