Popular Spanish language Bible study makes parents role models of faith for their children
The Archdiocese of Newark’s support for parish initiatives encourages ongoing faith formation not just for children but for adults as well. With the Parent Formation Biblical Studies Scholarship, St. Joseph of the Palisades in West New York created a valuable resource for fostering the faith development of parents and children within the Spanish-speaking community.
The fact that this program has been running successfully for three years and now serves around 150 adults who meet every Sunday at the parish community center demonstrates its value and impact. Many parents who attend the program are likely benefiting from their first exposure to in-depth Bible study, gaining the knowledge and spiritual growth necessary to engage in meaningful discussions with their children about faith. This approach has the potential to make parents role models of faith for their children.
The children’s catechesis materials are based on the Sunday gospel, as it invites parents to study the same biblical topics. This synchronizes the learning experience of parents and children, making it more likely that parents will actively participate in the program. The use of trained adult catechist volunteers and various educational resources, including printed materials and virtual aids, further enhances the program’s effectiveness.

The program’s emphasis on educating parents to fulfill their dual role as the first teachers of faith and tutors for their children in the catechesis process is both meaningful and effective. By offering the Sunday study program, St. Joseph of the Palisades is helping parents engage with their children’s religious education in a more informed and supportive way.
The holistic approach of involving catechists, priests, and parents in teaching children about the Sunday gospel is a wonderful way to ensure that the message of faith is consistently reinforced at home, in the church community, and during religious education.
The continued support from the Archdiocese of Newark, including initiatives like the Biblical Studies Scholarship, will be crucial for maintaining and strengthening this program over time. It is a promising example of how faith communities can work together to provide valuable resources and education for their members, ultimately enhancing the spiritual growth and understanding of both parents and children.
