New Jersey has a new Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Apostolos
New Jersey’s Greek Orthodox Christians have a new Metropolitan. Bishop Apostolos of Medeia was elected by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople as the new Metropolitan of the Metropolis of New Jersey.
On Thursday, Dec. 7, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, welcomed the newly appointed Archbishop Apostolos, lunching with him and giving him a tour of the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
The Metropolis of New Jersey extends to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. Patriarch Bartholomew has also appointed Metropolitan Apostolos to a term on the Holy Synod. Metropolitan Apostolos was enthroned at the Cathedral of Saint John the Theologian on Sept. 15.
Metropolitan Apostolos was born on the island of Rhodes in Greece. He was educated in Rhodes, Patmos, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and Boston University School of Theology. He holds two Master’s degrees. He has served in the Metropolis of Rhodes, of Boston, of San Francisco; and in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of New York.
For the past two years he has been responsible for the spiritual life of the Metropolis of New Jersey while still serving as auxiliary to Archbishop Elpidophoros. In that capacity, he has already become familiar to the Greek Orthodox parishes of our area, eleven of which are located in our Archdiocese of Newark.
On July 24, His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos upon the recommendation of His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, was unanimously elected by the members of the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate as the Metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey.
