From the archives: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Black Coordinating Council of the Archdiocese of Newark presented the 1986 Dr. Martin Luther King Awards to the 10 Black bishops of the United States during a Mass honoring Dr. King on January 19, 1986, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Pictured from left to right are Archbishop Gerety of Newark, Auxiliary Bishop Emerson J. Moore of New York, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph A. Francis of Newark, and Joyce Smith Carter, Chairman of the Black Catholic Coordinating Council.
