From the Archives: Mother Teresa Visits Newark, 1982

St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta speaks at St. Augustine’s Church during a visit to Newark in June 1982. Mother Teresa participated in Archbishop Gerety’s blessing and dedication of “The Home of Bethlehem,” a shelter for homeless women operated by her Missionaries of Charity. During a packed Mass at St. Augustine’s, she came to the altar to address the crowd. She stressed the importance of love for the poor, saying, “Love is not words; it is action. Our vocation is to love.”
