From the Archives: Catholic Sisters Week, 1958

St. Francis Xavier Cabrini was the first American citizen to be canonized a saint. She is best known for her dedication to assisting poor immigrants and for establishing numerous schools, orphanages, and social service institutions. In 1958, a statue of Mother Cabrini was erected in Mother Cabrini Park near Penn Station in Newark. Rev. Aloysius Carney is pictured at the dedication alongside a group from the Catholic War Veterans Mother Cabrini Post, who sponsored the statue. In 2024, the statue was relocated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in the Ironbound, where Mother Cabrini founded the first parochial school for the children of Italian immigrants in Newark.
