From the Archives: Bishop Joseph A. Francis Honors Dorothy Day’s Legacy in 1980
Bishop Joseph A. Francis preaches at a mass honoring Catholic journalist, social activist, and founder of the Catholic Worker newspaper Dorothy Day, on December 12, 1980, shortly after her death. Bishop Francis said of Day: “We thank God for Dorothy Day. We thank those men and women who were and are saintly enough to follow her. We pledge ourselves anew to support what she did and is still doing through the Catholic Worker. We do this not because we fear God’s wrath – but because we are compelled, as Dorothy was, by God’s love.”
