Archdiocese of Newark obituaries: October 2022

We remember and pray for our dearly departed clergy and men and women religious whose Masses of Christian Burial were held in October:

Deacon Justo Rodriguez-Berrios
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, for Deacon Justo Rodriguez-Berrios at the Parish of the Transfiguration, St. Ann’s Church in Newark.

Deacon Rodriguez-Berrios passed away peacefully on Sept. 28, 2022, surrounded by loved ones at his residence in Bloomfield, N.J., at 87.

Deacon Rodriguez-Berrios dedicated more than 30 years to the Catholic Church serving the Newark community as a Deacon at St. Rose of Lima, St Rocco’s, and his latest parish St. Ann’s Church, alongside his good friend and pastor, Father Josephat.
He devoted his time and love to the church, volunteered at the local hospital, and always had a positive attitude and a big smile.

He was the beloved husband to predeceased wife Isabel Castro Rodriguez married in July 1975. 

A devoted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, and friend who will be forever missed by everyone who was blessed to meet him. 
Deacon Rodriguez-Berrios was a beloved father to sons and daughters Justo Jr, Lisa, Angelina, Carlos, Maria (deceased), Richard, Yvette, Evelyn, and Elizabeth.  Grandfather to Manuel Jr, Jessica, Delilah, Laura, Vanessa, Jose, Kenneth, Robert, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Alanii, Richard Jr, and great-grandfather to over 23 children.

He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews as well as his beloved friends from the church.

Deacon Craig A. Stewart

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022, for Deacon Craig A. Stewart at Saint Stephen Church in Kearny.

Deacon Stewart of Wood-Ridge, formerly of Kearny, passed away on Oct. 5, 2022, at 70.

Deacon Stewart was ordained on May 21, 2011, serving in both the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Newark, and the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Wallington. 

Before retiring, Deacon Stewart was a Nutley Police Sergeant and served the community for 25 years. In his spare time, he was an EMT Instructor at the Bergen County EMS Training Center, Paramus, and a charter member of the Kearny Volunteer Emergency Squad.

He was the devoted husband of Roseanne Stewart (nee Carchidi). He was the beloved brother-in-law of Christine McShane, her husband Daniel, and John Carchidi and his wife, Sharon Levchak. Loving uncle to eight nieces and nephews and seven grandnieces and grandnephews.

Deacon Stewart had a great sense of humor and always loved making people laugh. He was an absolute classic car enthusiast. He will truly be missed by many loving family and friends.

Sister Nicholas Campasano, S.C.C.

Sister Nicholas Campasano

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2022, for Sister Nicholas Campasano, nee Mary Campasano, a Sister of Christian Charity.

Sister Nicholas Campasano died on Monday, October 24, 2022, at the Motherhouse in Mendham, N.J., at 89. 

Sister Campasano attended St. Benedict Grammar School in Brooklyn, where she was first introduced to the Sisters of Christian Charity, and then on to Cathedral Annex in the Bronx and Immaculata High School in Mendham, and finally Assumption College for Sisters in Mendham, N.J. Sister received her Holy Habit on Aug. 21, 1953, and went on to profess her final vows on Aug. 21, 1959.

Sister Campasano’s ministry throughout her life was varied. Although she preferred a homemaking ministry in the convent, her ministries also included teaching in grade school. She taught in Jersey City, N.J., Chatham, N.J., Philadelphia, Penna., Bronx, N.Y., Kingston, N.Y., and Hackettstown, N.J. 

Her homemaking career was also extensive and varied from portress to sacristan, to housekeeping, to retreat ministry at Villa Pauline, to hospitality coordinator, to local coordinator, and to motherhouse service in her final years.

Sister Campasano was the epitome of hospitality and cordiality to all she met. A natural combination of Martha and Mary in the spirit of the Gospel.

Sister was predeceased by all her brothers and sisters: Vincent, Emma (Finley), Salvatore, Frances (Galatolo), Carmella (Fiore), Michael, and Anthony. Among her living relatives are brother-in-law, Joseph Fiore; sister-in-law, Ann Campasano; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
