Summer feast days around the archdiocese

Parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Newark celebrated summer feast days with Masses, processions, and plenty of family fun.

Here’s how parishes have honored their holy feast days.

July 16: Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

According to Carmelite tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock on July 16, 1251, revealing the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, also known as the “Brown Scapular.” A century and a quarter later, the Carmelite Order began to commemorate this event by celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the same date.

July 26: Feast of Sts. Anne and Joachim

On July 26, the Church commemorates Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Virgin Mary. Their faith and perseverance carried them through the sorrow of childlessness to the joy of conceiving and raising the immaculate and sinless woman who would give birth to Christ. The angel who revealed this to Anne said: “The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive and shall bring forth, and your seed shall be spoken of in all the world.”
